I am so thankful to have grown up in a home where natural ingredients were normal. That mass produced products weren't bought on a regular basis, instead we had to find what we had and it usually was from our farm - hello goats milk and herbs!
Something has shifted in the air, I believe people are thinking more on what they are eating and what is going into their home, on their lawn, and even what they are putting on their skin. It's becoming more common to find natural ingredients (thank you Amazon!) and even more common to make our own of everything from home cleaning sprays to our perfume to face lotion. You save a lot of money by going simple! I mean, if plain white distilled vinegar was the main cleaning agent back when, why can't we continue to do that? It may stink a little but it's sure better than inhaling chemicals from standard cleaning products like 409.
So, here are a few of my favorite naturally minded items I make here on our homestead:
All around house cleaner spray: Simply place 1 Tablespoon of white vinegar with a favorite essential oil inside an empty spray bottle. Add water, shake and spray where needed. Toilets, floors, counters. I usually use peppermint, tea tree oil, or a thieves type brand of essential oil - I like this one.
Dandelion Salve: I make a jar of this every year, or sometimes every two years because a jar goes a long way! My kids know to find this jar whenever they have a cut, an owie, or if they simply need some cream for their hands. It's our cure-all cream here at our home! Dandelions are very welcome here on our homestead. We never spray our lawn, no need for extra chemicals near us and the children and especially our animals. Here is the recipe for you.
Lotion for your purse? The Joy Homestead has a solution to you! Safe for you and kids. I place this on my knuckles during the dry winters, and my lips when I can't find my lip balm. The screw top tin allows you to throw it in your purse without it getting ruined. And the best part, the beeswax allows it to stay firm in most warm weather conditions. You can find it here in Our Shop.
Looking to change your perfume? A lot of common perfumes that we have used (and love!) are filled with toxic chemicals, and we just happen to be spraying them onto our skin. Pooey! Instead, I have enjoyed different essential oils as my perfume. I sometimes get stuck on one for a while and then I switch it up with a different blend. Essential oils tend to take on your own body scent, making that oil smell different than if I were to wear it. Neato! So here is my current perfume of choice. I place a drop on my finger and rub it behind my ears and on my neck and sometimes near the crease of the inside of my elbow. Do you know those are places that hold scent the most? Interesting fact for you today!
Here are some other favorites:
Read the ingredients and see what scents you like to begin with. Do you like citrus? Deeper notes like cedar wood or patchouli? Or a blend of them? Try them until you find what you like. My daughter simply likes lemon, easy to please and she sure smells uplifting!
I hope this has given you some helpful ideas. Remember, introducing natural products or ideas into your home and life does not to be expensive! Use what you have or order what you can and make it stretch.
What is your favorite natural trick to use around the house or to use for yourself? I would love to know!
I'm cheering for you!
