all the layers of fire cider
Winter season is upon us here in Minnesota and with less fresh air and the tendency for sickness to come into our home, though it doesn't happen that often, I like to be prepared. Fire Cider to the rescue!
Really, this concoction of incredibly healing root veggies and herbs, topped with apple cider vinegar does wonders to our immune system. You can take it on the onset of feeling icky, as a preventive, or you can choose to take spoonfuls or small glasses of it when you feel that tickle in your throat. I store it in the fridge after the 6 weeks of it sitting on my counter, fully being ignored and getting all good and powerful for my family.
I always double or triple this recipe, making up to a half gallon or more at a time. Once you strain the contents of the jar you are left with half the amount of liquid. Though it is powerful and you need little at a time for a dose, why not have more available?
This is how I take it: Pour into a big spoon and quickly dump in my mouth and then I run for a drink of water. It will make you jiggle and wiggle because of the tartness! I will sometimes put a spoonful into some warm or hot water with raw honey, making it go down easier and probably helping a sore throat too. My kids tend to need bribing in order to take this, so I go heavy on the honey and make sure the dose isn't as heavy as mine.
Step 1: grab your kids and get them chopping.
Cut up some crazy roots that you don't normally use, like this here horseradish. yes, it smells just as spicy as it tastes!
This is tumeric root. Tastes okay, not much like anything.
It's okay to use dried spices if that's what you have!
Ginger root, easily RECOGNIZABLE and it's a good spicy when eaten raw. Try it!
have your kids help you pull apart two bulbs of garlic and smash the cloves for easy chopping.
add parsley and other herbs.
At the time of making this batch I only had fresh parsley, it's okay to use dried herbs too. I didn't have an orange on hand, so a lemon was the only citrus that was placed in the jar.
fill the jar with apple cider vinegar.
